Shanghai Simcom and Kineto Wireless are set to collaborate on developing UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) handsets. Simcom will incorporate Kineto's UMA technology into dual-mode (GSM/EDGE and Wi-Fi) handsets. UMA-enabled mobile devices offer automatic detection of and switching between GSM and Wi-Fi networks, not only enabling better performance but also cutting costs for users. The two companies expect their solution to be adopted by service providers worldwide.
